Learning Objectives:
1. Differentiate sibling rivalry from sibling abuse.
2. Assess risk factors for sibling abuse.
3. Identify signs and effects of sibling abuse.
4. Identify the importance of exploring both positive, leading edge meanings and
negative, trailing edge meanings embedded within a client’s narrative.
5. Integrate psychodynamic understanding and strategies with cognitive
behavioral strategies when working with severely depressed clients who may
be prone to suicide.
6. Identify grief and loss indicators for the foster and adopted person.
7. Summarize the psychological and emotional impact of early trauma and
separation from the mother.
8. Discuss how the loss of the “biological family” effects the attachment between
the adoptive parents and the child.
9. Give examples of challenges to be aware of for foster and adopted children,
and what a parent and/or professional can do to help.
