Making Room for Emotions: Understanding the Relationship Between Emotions and Connection with Our Authentic Self and Others


Participants will learn the Change Triangle, a practical map for understanding how emotions work in the mind and body to help us connect us to our authentic self and others. Learn an effective holistic tool to decrease anxiety and depression and connect more deeply to whomever or whatever you want. Get a basic education in emotions and a new way to understand trauma and transformation.

By the end of this program, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe and explain the Change Triangle psychoeducational tool so clients/patients understand why they feel disconnected from themselves and others.
  2. Identify core and inhibitory emotions and the defenses that block access to the authentic Self to set the stage for change and transformation and specifically to foster more secure connections.
  3. Apply 3 techniques to co-create relational safety including moment-to-moment noticing of non-verbal communications in couples' work.
  4. Apply 3 techniques to build confidence, compassion, and connection from the body up.


  • Hilary Jacobs Hendel, LCSW

    Hilary Jacobs Hendel, LCSW, takes the complex world of emotions and makes them easy to understand and work with for greater peace, calm and confidence. She is the developer of the Change Triangle tool for emotional health. Hilary is also the author of the award-winning self-help book on emotions called, "It’s Not Always Depression: Working the Change Triangle to Listen to the Body, Discover Core Emotions, and Connect to Your Authentic Self" (Random House, 2018). She is a certified psychoanalyst and AEDP psychotherapist and supervisor. She has published articles in The New York Times, TIME, Oprah, Salon, and professional journals.
