Deciding Whether to Become a Medicare Provider

Course Description:
As of January 1, 2024, MFTs and MHCs will be eligible to become Medicare providers. During this 1-hour Law and Ethics presentation, CAMFT Staff Attorney, Sara Jasper will discuss the pros and cons of becoming a Medicare Provider. As part of her discussion, Ms. Jasper will describe Medicare behavioral health codes and reimbursement rates being proposed. Ms. Jasper will review Medicare’s current telehealth policies. Ms. Jasper will describe what is generally required of Medicare providers during the provider enrollment process and beyond. Finally, Ms. Jasper will share how prospective providers can prepare to complete the application and enrollment process as well as the steps MFTs and MHCs who wish to opt-out of Medicare must take to be excluded from the program.

At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will be able to:
  • Describe how CMS is proposing to incorporate MFTs and MHCs into the Medicare Fee-For-Service system through the Calendar Year 2024 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule proposed rule.
  • Describe the behavioral health codes and reimbursement rates CMS is proposing as part of the Calendar Year 2024 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule proposed rule.
  • Identify current Medicare telehealth law and policies.
  • Identify Medicare’s requirements for providers during the provider enrollment process and beyond.
  • Identify the steps MFTs and MHCs can take now to begin the Medicare enrollment process.
  • Identify the steps MFTs and MHCs must take to opt-out of the Medicare program to fulfill their legal and ethical obligations
