
Course Description:
Our workshop is a dynamic presentation on clinical strategies for reducing clients’ risk for firearm-related harm. We address the epidemiology of firearm injury and death in the US, detail risk factors for firearm injury, give an overview of firearms and safe firearm storage, and comprehensively discuss clinical strategies for reducing firearm injury and death with mental health clients. Our workshop incorporates the best available research, clinical best practices, and evidence-based recommendations to help participants become more informed, more effective partners in keeping their clients safe and in reducing the overall burden of firearm injuries.

- Name the four main types of firearms, the three most common reasons for ownership, and the four primary safe storage techniques
- Identify three categories of risk for firearm-related harm and ways to engage with clients to reduce that risk
- Name two available mental health interventions for clients at risk of firearm-related harm
