Description



This presentation will examine the factors of Covid bereavement that may lead to prolonged and complicated grief. Special attention will focus on evidence-based strategies appropriate for the treatment of multiple types of losses. You will acquire the skills to tailor clinical interventions to the unique needs of each client’s grief experiences.

At the end of this session, participants will be able to:
1. Name three theoretical frameworks and three interventions in the grief and loss field through didactic and experiential learning for dealing with grieving clients.
2. Know how to plan and implement appropriate assessments, interventions, and strategies to help individuals and families cope with loss and grief to improve treatment outcomes.
3. Explain the difference between depression, grief, and prolonged/complicated grief.
4. Understand at least three practical strategies through informative learning for dealing with unpredictability and uncertainty with the transitioning into in-person sessions.

  • Brad Leary, LCSW, CT

    Brad Leary, LCSW, CT is a licensed clinical social worker and certified thanatologist (the study of death, dying and bereavement). He has worked in healthcare for 22 years primarily in oncology and hospice care. Brad is currently working part time at Hospice of the Valley in San Jose providing counseling services for all types of losses. He is a certified grief counselor specializing in sudden and traumatic deaths including suicide loss. In addition to his work, Brad has a part time psychotherapy practice in the Bay Area. His area of focus is grief and loss, mood and anxiety disorders. Brad was previously on the Board of Directors for the Bay Area Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and chair of the bereavement and loss committee. An avid believer in self care, Brad enjoys hiking, tennis, travel, attending San Francisco Giants baseball games and playing with his dog, Harley.
